Ecology of Kandaburi Resort and spa; updated 3 3rd November  2009 
Since our first introduction a few years back, a lot has changed since then and we would like to bring you all up to par with movements and achievement within and out side the resort. Pictures will follow this report, giving you a better understanding of what has been done, to achieve our environmental, ecological and green initiatives. Our staff understand that there is value in what we do, not just selling off recycled items to collect money for their events, they understand that the value is in protecting the future for our children and their children, this is what are working on and will continue to do so, to enhance the ecological and environmental issues that must be addressed world wide, what we do today will count for the future there is no going back  anymore, we must ensure a total commitment, the planet she needs us now more than ever and for sure we need  her for our existence for future generations: 

Recycling one step more:
Normal separation of plastics, bottles, tin is a basic standard at Kandaburi; we have gone one step again with recycling the entire resort, kitchen waste, coffee corner waste.

Garbage separation at the Resort:
Let's take a look at the kitchen waste,on our web site we show our monthly waste separation by kilos, showing what were use and what goes to the local Goverment (Tessaban).Fruit and vegetable peelings are  sent to the gard deners to mix with mulch to make compost. Fruits such as pineapple and skins of watermelon, gets separated to make EM, effective Microorganism, this we can use for fertilizer, or just to clean bathrooms and add to the waste water system. Bones and shells of seafood gets sent to the gardeners to make EM we call is "Palah EM" it will take three months for the molasses to break this down, this can be sued on flowers and as a garden Enhancer.

Plastic Bags:
The all famous plastic bag can now be collected kept and re sold to sellers, from there it goes to one of two recycling plants in Thailand to make Bio diesel from the plastic as bags are oil based products. Kandaburi keeps the bags until we have a good weight then we can sell.

Tin foil and covers:
Theose tin foil covers form yogurt pots, or chip bags, wrappers for chocolates and the butter portion cartons with their foil cover, all can be re sold, and again we have our section to separate this now at Kandaburi - will take a lot to make a kilo, then that is not the point, we are a team of dedicated garbage separators.

What we do with the garbage:
Separation is a major factor for us at Kandaburi;what ever it is we can separate and sell it off,it all boils down to taking that extra time. We sell what can be sold, what they cant sell we give to the local government to ship off the Island part of our4 R,s and not three as we had in the past, the 4th R is remove it from Koh Samui.

Chart of the monthly reducion:
we have a monthly chart of how much each separation it is collected each day, how much we shall keep and how much will be sent to the local tip, in comparison you can see we can re use and re cycle over 2-1/2 tons to over 4 tons in very busy monts.
Coffee grounds can make good compost, or converted to make mushroom growing bags.

The kitchen garden on the hill:
There will be on our site, a small drawing of the hillside with the locations of where all our effort has gone into. The garden is still growing at least every few months more banana trees or saplings are moved form the lower areas next to the resort builfings and re planted,in 9 months great sweet bananas can be collected and given to the guest rooms.

The compost heap:
Having purchased a mulcher, we are now able to reduce our garden wastes,the local government have made five bigger mulchers available for the community great initiative.And we can now borrow when we need to do bigger tasks, most hotels would have over a ton and more each month, this all adds up to our concept to recycle and reduce as much as we can to protect the planet.
To date we can wse over 4 tons of compost that has been maturing for the past three months, sure works wonders on the plants ans trees.

The worm hotel:
a new addition was to introduce a small worm  hotel, consisting of plastic cupboard, with 4 drawers each, three of the drawers have holes drilled in them to let the urine of the worms seep down to the bottom drawer we can keep,this is tip top fertilizer and can be used on most garden plants,mixed with water.We purchased two for the intial experiment, 1 kg tiger worms were donated by another green hotel on Koh Samui. Worms create and clean the system they are a natural soil detective cleaning as they eat along,feed them some scraps and it comes out as worm casts,great to mix the compost or just soil for potting.

EM production:
has gone one step further at Kandaburi, our chief Cardener Worapol (Khun Dome) began to experiment from just the vasic EM, of fruits and veg peelings to only fruits to make a bathroom cleaner,all 183 rooms were cleaned over the past few months and does bring off the dirt and grime. Then he began with flowers of orchids after weeings he collected them and added brown sugar he leaves them for 45 days the end results were outstanding.
He then looked at the bones of meat and fish bones,and shells of the shrimps,we call this EM "palalah" Thai sardine from the north as the smell can be over powering for the first month of fermentation with molasses, he will leave these for 45 days opening each day to let some of the gases escape.One that we found was EM made from cut bananas mixed with brown  sugar and left for one month, this is a great tonic for the body.

What the beach throws at us:
It's that time of year again, when we have to keep a very close eye on our beach and what gets washed up, mostly the flotsam from tidal currents, In November there is a total change of the moon and with this comes a weather pattern change the monsoon comes into effect and bigger storm out to sea.
We collect the plastic and bring this to our separation area, what we are now collecting the seaweed, we wash it off then bring it to our hillside compost areas tp dry out and then add to the compost heap, great for the gardens.

• สามารถเปลี่ยนจากขยะ เป็นสิ่งที่มีประโยชน์ เช่นการทำ EM เพื่อทำปุ๋ยหมัก (Recycle)

Purpose of the project

The recyclable garbage from the hotel such as a bottle, aluminum can and paper were collected and sold.

The staff can get some extra money for using with their activities as staff party and also can be help to reduce the global warming problem.

• Try to decrease and manage of the problem that concern to the environment and nature (Reduce)
• Try to bring the item that can be use it again(Reuse)
• Try to change the garbage to a new product or add more value to the product (Recycle)
